Evelyn Glennie shows how to listen

What struck you?
What struck me was how without the sticks she could play the instrument, and do different sounds wit her hands and invent some to and also add her bracelet noise but what was the most striking thing is that she's death; and she can still add other sounds and make them sound good together and she doesn't need to hear nothing.

What did you notice?
I noticed that you could tell that she's really into music and although she can't hear what she's playing she feels it some how;and what I also noticed was that she could close her eyes and still be on track on what her next note or where ever shes putting her note is going to be. And also I noticed she has an accent which I thought it was nice:) although it sounded funny.

What did you enjoy about her performance?
What I enjoyed about her performance was how she played it, but that she was playing solo with nobody like a partner etc. And also I liked how she was explaining the instruments that if the "marimba" didn't have that space below it wouldn't sound the same or better.

School garden

Student questions:
What type of plants are you growing?
Strawberries, flowers, artichokes, onion, carrots, beats, potato, cabbage, Suzuki, cilantro, mint, oregano.

What are the flowers for?
Flowers and plants were added to attract bugs, ladybugs etc.for more benefit on our plants, to get all the nutrients.

When did you start with the project?
We started in October.

What type of fertilizer/soil do you use for the plants?
We use old leaves for fertilizer for the plants because it turns into rich soil.

How is the system to water the plants?
We put black tubes and placed them on ever base to cover it, and it waters the plants it doesn't use nor waste water it uses the exact amount.

questions:
What did you like or not like about the garden?
I didn't like it that much because it was to small and sort of everybody was in one spot and there was barely shade, but the plants they were growing were cool that's the only things that i didn't really like.

What struck you about it?
What stuck me about the garden was how the students put it all together like connected the water tube and how was it going to get water, and the time when plus using leaves for soil.

Would you like to continue the seniors work?
Um... I really wouldn't because I don't really like and not interested in planting and all those things I don't find it fun, but it's not bad or nothing they really did a good job on it.

Sustainability visit

Link to video

1. What struck you about the location you visited? Was it what you expected, or very different? What struck me was that there was a lot more people walking around then I expected, I thought that there were going to be like 6 families and barely people and just grown- ups but there were adults, seniors, and children. I expected it to be more quiet to but it was the opposite there was even music and people asking questions of the different organics there were.
2. Which items were cheaper than you expected? Which were more expensive? Well It would depend like what I saw was that the littler fruits,or vegetables etc. were cheaper but the pound was a lot just for a few, and the bigger kinds of things were not cheap at all, sort of everything was at a high price but some things weren't.
3. Do you think you will start going to a farmers market more often? Or using a community garden? Or supporting a CSA? Well I really don't know because my mom is the one that does the shopping sometimes when I'm not with because I'm at school, And when I do go with her for groceries it mostly at supermarket, Pancho Villa etc. It's really rare when we go to an organic market; just sometimes we do cause my mom works with a lady that sales toughs types of things,And she buys off her.
4. How do these locations fit into our essential questions of “Why Don’t People Live More Sustainably?” and “How Can I Convince them to do So?”
Well It's really up to them because some prefer to not pay a lot for like a piece of celery etc, but some actually really want there kids to be healthy so they try and make more money so there payments well even out and they can buy what they think is better for them and for there loved ones; not just go for the cheapest things because It doesn't last a long time.Like a new pair of shoes obviously your not going to go buy it at the 99 cent store because if you use the common sense there going to tear quickly in a couple of days then if you buy them at a shoe pavilion,DGB etc.

Talking these ideas out

What me and my family talked about was that these days we have seen difference in our food choices, but that anyways in any healthy food we get its not natural or organic. And that sometimes we don't make the right decisions in food we eat out when there's food in the house sometimes, but we didn't really based on that just that yeah there's not many good things we can find and that my mom always checks the labels and all though other things which sometimes maybe exaggerating. But after that everyone started going there way and doing there things so we never finished because they weren't in to it but the last person at the table with me was my mom which wasn't a surprise because she really gets into things easily and mostly if it has to do with our school; so we just kept talking she asked me some questions. Like what did i learn etc. and after that she changed subject to the chores I have to do but that's about it

Dialectic journal-school daze

Quote:
"When the youngsters of your culture graduate from school (unless their families continue to
take care of them), they must immediately find someone to give them money to buy the things they need
in order to survive. In other words, they have to find jobs. You should be able to explain why this is so."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Response:
I think that at the age of 13-14 that they say know things don't completely know a lot they have more things to pass through, barely taking that next step but scared to take it completely. And just act tough and that they do know a lot and everything for there age just to look good in front of other people and especially there parents, saying i don't need your help I can do it on my own, I'm not a baby no more I can take care of myself, and blah blah blah. But us as the teenagers know that it's all the opposite we do need a lot from our parents and that we are constantly asking them for things that we want need or just saw something at the moment you liked and just make up excuses of why you need it but we only say lies to get our way, which sometimes don't work but it's worth a try. The thing is that at some point or our whole life's growing up as an adult were going to need our parents for something or just any little thing or what to wear etc.So the point is we don't know everything as teenagers,We need someone there.

Everything Is going to be Alright

My name is Pedro I’m 2 years old and I have a happy family, it hasn’t been that long since we moved houses I’m a single child and raised with lots of love. I help my mommy in making food when a dad at work, her food by the way is good! When dads home I usually pass the majority time with him, yeah my life is perfect well that’s what I used to think. Until one day my dad left us… he went to war and now life hasn’t been the same. My uncle comes all the time; he's always been there since my dad left. This is nice because he’s like a 2nd dad to me, although I miss my dad I know he’s doing the right thing.
A year has passed by really quickly my birthday passed, my uncle Francisco got me a toy I always wanted, he knows every single thing of me I love him, another year came by fast, still nothing no sign or even a letter from dad my mom would take me into her arms until I would fall asleep she would repeat, Everything is going to be okay he’ll come back I promise“. Years passed by 1,2,3,4,5,6 already and until one day on a Saturday night and it was pouring rain, we were gathered around the table drinking hot chocolate talking and laughing the door bell rings, “ding dong” my mom questioned herself because it was late already, she opened the door and it was a tall guy with a beard not that long and not that short, his eyes were big, his hair was brown and short, he handed my mom a paper and left without a word as my mom opened it her face looked worried she started crying and she fell on her knees as if she had two heavy rocks pulling on her, as I went up to her I didn’t want to believe that it had something to do with dad I read it and didn’t get the words, but my dad’s name was on it. I asked my mom, “what does it say about daddy, mommy?” my mom couldn’t speak it was as if she had a knot in her throat. She started telling me in a lowered voice almost whispering, your dad, your dad died at war, memories started accumulating and my tears started gaining on me.
My mom was heartbroken; devastated I couldn’t say I know how it feels because I’ve never been a wife. Life seemed small, my uncle had been there to support me and my mom in that time were we felt the world was falling on us. Time had passed my looked new again and thanks to my uncle I felt safe and protected, my life was forming up again I got on the soccer team and the best as always, I’m now in middle school moving onto high school I’m not that little kid no more that used to play around with cardboard boxes and think that, that was life. My mom and uncle started a relationship so far I could say that I’m happy…

It was my 8th grade graduation the day were I was officially older moving on to high school that day was the best my dad I mean uncle came and my mom they looked really happy, and proud of me. We came back really late that day and a man was standing outside our house and his hair was short and he had a blue marine t-shirt with a pair of jeans he looked familiar something he had I remembered my dad and as we walked up to him you could see a scar on the side of his eye close to the eyebrow, as my mom got closer she began to cry I couldn’t understand why she was but the man was looking directly to me and it made me feel uncomfortable my mom turned to me and said “this is your dad Pedro” she told me with a confused and terrified voice as if he came from the dead. All of a sudden i started feeling cold as if I were in a refrigerator at the moment i felt confused and scared I don't know why but something wasn't right. A week passed by with him in the house it wasn’t the same something inside me was telling me that something wrong was going to happen, another day passed and he seemed mad and frustrated, my uncle took him aside to talk to him brother to brother and see what was happening my uncle asked him “why have you been different with your wife and son? You’re not yourself no more; you've been acting strange what is your problem?” He took time to answer and he said you are in the deepest and hard voice you could think of it was like if he were throwing me a rock to the head, he started breathing hard I wanted to explain that things just happen and time goes by fast and life goes on he said “why do you think that you could just take my wife like that! And even my sons love? Who do you think you are?”

He took a tree branch and out of no where stood up to my uncle Francisco “do you think I’m STUPID? DO YOU THINK THAT YOU COULD JUST DO WHATEVER YOU WANT? I thought you were my brother he fell and got on his knees he started crying, my uncle grabbed his shoulder and said, “Everything is going to be alright” “no its not going to be alright! Because she’s with you instead of me and the worst part is that you slept with my only true love. “But you must understand that we thought you were dead and she needed support and I was there to help her pass through this hard time” “you helped by sleeping with my wife?” “things happen brother”, as I could hear my uncle and my father scream at each other I could feel a chill going down my spine when all of a sudden my father lifted the branch as if he were going to hit uncle Francisco, as I saw what was about to occur I immediately reacted and went outside to stop him I ran as fast as I could and I stepped in front of my uncle my father was furious and determined to harm my uncle and because of that, I don’t believe he noticed me standing there and hit me across the face. “Where’s my uncle? And my mom and my father?” I said as I woke up from the hospital, the doctor with a serious face said “son your father developed anger issues at the war and because of that, the shock of seeing your uncle with your mom made your father angry at the point were he killed your uncle and your mom I’m sorry” the doctor held me tight into his arms and swayed me back and forth and said “everything is going to be alright” and he left the room. I got really depressed after that and started seeing things that weren't even real I felt I was going down, I started doing drugs which my mom would always tell me not to do now it wasn't the same I felt like shit! It was my entire fault I have no right to be forgiven but yet to apologize for excising I am now writing these last words before I die, because I can’t handle the pain.

TV on the Go

1. A brief summary of the topic. What is it? What field of research does it fall under?
That they are sending TV live to cellphones, netbooks, and other mobile devices as well. It falls under entertainment.

2. What's the big deal with this topic? Why should you care about its developments and any new discoveries that are made?
That it you don't need to be at your house watching that big screen, if you need to be somewhere else you could watch your favorite show or whatever on your cellphone, or even on a netbook.

3. What's going to happen to this topic in 2010?
Many people are going to be crazy about this new thing and get it, then it'll get old and something better will come up.

4. What obstacles or setbacks are in the way of this topic's success?
I think a difficulty would be something wrong happening to the connection, when the company etc. already sold and it starts going wrong.

essay

Minoans Art & Architecture

Although the Minoan civilization was eventually destroyed by a tidal wave, the lasting beauty of their art and architecture show a happy, successful people. The Minoans lived in Greece on an island, they were a wealthy society because the arts they would create/do such as frescos, paintings, and there pottery art work.

You could really tell they would take there time and enjoy what they would do because basically all the paintings, and frescos would be on animals and nature. They really liked animals and appreciated them since they live close and basically with those two things around them. My society the Minoans are unique because on there own they would do art pieces like frescos, pottery as I said, and they care for animals. Plus there pottery in the early period ceramics where characterized by linear patterns of spirals, triangles, curved lines, crosses, fishbone motifs. In the middle period it was naturalistic designs such as fish, squid, birds, and lilies. In the late period it was flowers, and animals but the variability had increased so it changed a little. [1]

They succeeded at doing frescos because they would turn out really pretty, and the strong sturdy architecture they would do for example there palaces and columns, the palaces where constructed at the end of the early Minoan period in the third millennium BC; they were built in different locations the oldest palaces only had one story and no representative facades, they were u-shaped with a big central court, and were smaller then the palaces done later on, it would change more and look better.
Then for the columns they would be unique and which were wider at the top than the bottom, creating an illusion of greater height, the columns were also made out of wood and stone and where painted red and they were just put on a simple stone base and topped with a pillow-like round piece as a capital. Another thing they succeeded at was there writing they invented, and they called it Linear A. [2] [3]

I think the Minoans weren’t weak or didn’t need more of, but the only time they were, was when a tidal wave washed out there civilization where they were living at. If they would have done a giant wall to cover then it wouldn’t have happened and with good material, but other then that they would always succeed.

The Assyria and Minoan are much like the same because in a way they both were a wealthy civilization and most alike in a few things. Like the Minoans loved art and appreciated and loved animals to and so did the Assyria they loved to paint and all those, things that have to do with that and they also liked animals but the had this thing for a lion they would appreciate it and it symbolizes like power for them and loyalty, and they were betrayed by the lion. And the Minoans were betrayed by there natural environment they both were betrayed but not by the same thing.
Although the Minoans where destroyed by their own environment they are overall successful because after all that had happened there art and what they did showed happy, the opposite and detailed. How I know is because the water came in and washed out there civilization and did a mess. But even after all those things they did the impossible and did even more then they expected and succeeded at that.
They showed excellence in what they would do and always try or do right, there architecture was sturdy and simple but good quality they invented there own writing which was called Linear A which they would use to communicate with themselves they loved nature and animals, they were successful.

TTpillar

Description
all of us had to paint a drawing on to the pillars that are in the commons that represented your theme you were doing like for me an ex. art&architecture was mine and i was going to paint a man that was royal from back then but changed it to some red columns they had in the palaces.

Process
How i got to the final product was by doing sketches of how my drawing and what my idea was, so that when i passed it to the pillar i didn't have that much trouble to do it.

Reflection
I learned that always you have to sketch out what you have in mind, so that there won't be no mistakes. Some challenges i encountered were one my drawing it didn't turn out to be the one i had on my sketch, because i found it harder to paint it. Something different i would do is my pillar to not sketch out something and not do the same drawing or do it but do a easier drawing that really represents my civilization. Later on it will help me to be organized and know what I'm going to do and do it.

TT Essay

Project description
We each had a group of 4 and, we had to choose what each person was going to research on, like what were the Minoans art&architecture things that were a success and also for, government, culture, technology.

Process
To get to the final product i reviewed my papers and what i thought would make sense another way and, sound better i would change and ask the teacher or my friends.

Reflection
i learned to go back and double check because there will always be mistakes no piece of writing you do is perfect the 1st time you have to keep reviewing it till you think you have given your best est, some challenges i had was the bibliography, and how to put foot notes. What i would do different is to go up to the teacher more and ask on what else do i need because i turned my paper stayed after school for the foot notes and add more to my paper but it didn't give me the grade i was looking forward to so i would change that. That will help me later on so that i won't have to go up to the teacher and ask again what others have already asked before me to depend on me and what i know and how to review and do my papers.
